Introduction
The mower does the bulk of the lawn, but it is the line trimmer that makes it look finished. Crisp edges along paths, neat lines around garden beds and tidy fence lines are what make a section look properly cared for.
With spring growth kicking in, here is how to get more out of your line trimmer with less effort and less mess.
Start with the right line
Line thickness
Thicker line cuts tougher growth and lasts longer, but it needs more power to spin. Always use a line diameter your trimmer is rated for. Check the manual or ask us. Too thick and you will strain the motor; too thin and it will wear down in no time.
Line shape
- Round line is durable and a good all-rounder for general lawn edges
- Square or star-shaped line has cutting edges that slice through thicker grass and weeds more cleanly
Keep spare line on hand
Nothing stops a job faster than running out. Keep a spool in the shed, and if re-loading the head is a fiddle, ask us to show you the quickest way for your model.
Technique that makes a difference
Hold it at the right height
Keep the head just above the ground and let the tip of the line do the cutting. Pushing the head down into the soil wears through line fast and scalps the lawn.
Cut with the tip, not the whole line
The outer few centimetres of the line are moving fastest and cut best. Work into the grass gradually rather than burying the whole head in it.
Work in the right direction
Most trimmer heads spin anticlockwise, so clippings are thrown to one side. Walk so the clippings are thrown away from paths, windows and cars, and onto the lawn you have yet to mow.
Edging along paths
For a crisp vertical edge, tilt the trimmer so the head is on its side and the line cuts straight down along the path edge. Move slowly and keep it steady. The first time takes practice, but after that it is quick.
Around trees and posts
Line whipping against bark can damage young trees badly. Approach trunks carefully, or leave a small ring of mulch around them so you do not need to trim right up to the bark.
Petrol or battery?
For most town sections, a battery line trimmer is the easy choice: light, quiet, no fuel to mix, and it starts first time. For long fence lines, rough grass and bigger properties, a petrol trimmer gives you more run time and power. If you are clearing gorse or heavy scrub, step up to a brushcutter with a blade.
Safety first
- Always wear eye protection. Line trimmers throw stones and debris surprisingly far
- Wear long trousers and sturdy shoes
- Keep kids, pets and bystanders well clear, at least 15 metres
- Check the area first for stones, wire and toys hidden in the grass
Keep it running well
- Clean grass off the head and guard after each use
- Check the guard is intact, as it is what keeps the line at the right length
- For petrol models, use fresh fuel and a clean air filter
- Store battery packs somewhere cool and dry
Good edges are mostly technique. Get the line right, keep the head just off the ground, and let the tip do the cutting.
